As I’m sure you’ll remember, Joey Barton sent out some tweets a month back with a few choice words for PSG’s Thiago Silva. Barton is a common user of the Twitter machine and increasingly becoming a CotW favorite. We think his Twitter rants are pure gold, but apparently not everyone else does.
After referring to Thiago Silva as a “ladyboy”, PSG got all up in arms about the whole thing and threatened legal action against the English midfielder and his adopted team, Marseille. Barton apologized and had to go in front of an ethics committee but no action was taken because the comments were in English (what?).
Now the review committee has gone back on their judgment and will hand Barton a 2-match suspended ban. Basically he is on probation and if he gets into any more Joey Barton moments this year, his ban will kick in. Considering there are only 3 games left in the season, he should be able to make it; but then again, this is Joey Barton.
Controversial characters are our favorite here at CotW (see: Mario Balotelli), so clearly Mr. Barton is up at the top end of that list. Here’s to hoping he has a home next season and remains very much in the headlines, or we may be out of business.
