In the summer of 2011 came the big rumour that Wayne Rooney was on his way out of Manchester United and going to Real Madrid, or Manchester City, or Barcelona, or Chelsea, or whatever fuck you. This is common in the world of football, and quite justified back then as Rooney himself said he wouldn’t be signing a new contract at Old Trafford. This could possibly even be labeled as above rumour level and actually had some truth to it.
However, news today is in that PSG are putting together a sensational bid for the 27 year old England striker. The Times of London, an actual reputable and legitimate news outlet, has reported that the mega rich Parisian side are willing to start talks at about £40 million. With Rooney’s contract set to expire in 2 years, some are saying this could be a bid the Premier League leaders would consider. One might argue that Rooney is now out of favor with the in-form striker Van Persie scoring most of the goals for the Red Devils, not to mention Sir Alex has Chicharito and Danny Welbeck in his back pocket.
The oil-money-backed club would be looking to partner up Rooney with current in-house nutcase Zlatan Ibrahimovic. We’ve chronicled PSG’s recent transfer moves here at Cheeks before, and this seems like something completely feasible for them. But would United really part ways with the beloved Rooney? Would Rooney, a true Englishman, really go place in France? (Yes, I know, Beckham. But that kinda doesn’t count.) Perhaps this could help finance a move for Ronaldo back to Manchester? Perhaps the Glazers want more money for their pockets? There are multiple scenarios that could play out. As is the case with most rumours, I’m guessing nothing happens. It just doesn’t look right.
