This moral conundrum has been playing on repeat over and over in my head for the past few weeks. Last month, I started trolling around the internet looking for a good investment opportunity when I decided to look and see which footy squads had stock available on the market. I came across a few possibilities; some safe, and some just plain silly.
- Borussia Dortmund: BVB
Back-to-Back Bundesliga titles are not the only things brewing in this German Sides pockets. BVB; after nearly a decade of diminishing returns, have really hit their stride and investors are starting to turn a profit. With the teams new found success comes merchandising deals, sponsorships and TV deals that mean mega
bucks Euros for investors. The only problem; they are trading on the DAX (German Stock Exchange based out of Frankfurt) and I literally have no how this exchange functions and I don’t have time to keep up with how Angela Merkel plans on fixing the entire European business and trade landscape, mostly because I am rather lazy. Also, if you’re looking long-term, once Polish super kid Robert Lewandowski leaves for Bayern Munich this summer, wins will be harder to come by in 2013-2014.
- Juventus FC:
I’m pretty sure that if I got together with about 10 of my buddies we could own a majority stake in Juventus. 0.21/share! For a piece of the Italian Champs! Bargain Basement City! For a team that looks like they will be once again winning the Serie A this season, this looks like a promising buy…if you can trust the Borsa Italiana (BIT) Exchange in Milan. I mean Italians have never been shady when it comes to dealing with money, transactions and general business right?
And last but not least…
- Manchester United FC: MANU
And finally, the holding that I’m currently losing sleep over. This stock had a pretty slow start after it’s IPO in August 2012, but in recent months it has really shown a lot of promise. Think about the cash machine that is Manchester United. Biggest footy fanbase on the Planet!! They are Borussia Dortmund X 1,000 and they are traded on the NYSE, an exchange that I can
definitely sort of trust!! The issue still remains; I’m a massive Liverpool supporter. Don’t know why, but back in the day when I decided to start enjoying footy (thank you FIFA 2006) I started playing as Liverpool and have followed them ever since. I absolutely LOATHE Manchester United as a team and also cannot stand most of their supporters (minus ajbg and his entire family, they are really great people from the Manchester Area).
But at the end of the day, I’m 26 years old and really need to beef up a nice nest egg for a future home and I don’t even want to think about how expensive my kids education will be in about 25 years. Normally, when I don’t know what to do in terms of financials, I’ll ask my dad for his opinion, and this morning, he shed some light on my moral decision:
Boom, decision made
